A Guide to Wood Science
Wood science is the study of wood as a material that is renewable and of biological origin. Wood technology is now the way the tools are utilized in the processes of wood preservation. To be able to study wood it has to be compared to other products. The comparison made against other products will include the features of the material against those of wood, the value and the ease it can be worked on. The many Merits of timber and these technologies improve wood to be superior over other products. Some of these advantages include wood being a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of products. Wood is renewable, and this makes it more precious. The other merit is that a part of the harvested material is at the same time used as energy to produce the product.
The good appearance of your timber made structure cannot be guaranteed if protection of the timber is not done. The biggest threat to wood being moisture and insects has to be kept away from the wood. The moisture courses the timber to decay and the insects eat through the wood. There are many ways timber is treated among them being the ACQ in other words alkaline copper Quaternary. This is a copper-based preservative that is applied to the wood for protection. Although being a good method to use for wood protection it has presents some few challenges. The chemical is highly corrosive to most metals, the chemical corrodes away galvanized fasteners and therefore only stainless steel is used. The species of the wood and the application of the wood will determine how many chemicals will be used on the wood. The concentration level of the chemical will be different for two pieces of wood where one is used above ground and the other close to a water body.
Many methods are being invented to protect the wood, and one of them is the copper metal method. This method is being accepted fast because is friendly to wooden fasteners. An alternative name to be given to this method is the micronized copper wood preservative method. A high-pressure liquid that has the copper metal mixed in it is driven into the wood. In other copper-based preservation methods copper is dissolved in chemicals while in this method copper is driven into the wood as a metal. This process is highly effective and the wood properties and heightened. The time the wood products treated using this method last is longer other types of treatment.
The micronized copper preservative has proven to be highly effective in protecting the wood against fungal decay and termites. It is not corrosive to metals used in together with the product. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has proven the effectiveness of this science as one of the best wood preservation methods.
